Because our puppies are now inside for extended periods of time, how can you potty train them during COVID-19?
Puppies are a major responsibility that comes with the chance to create a lifelong friend, but initial training and potty training can be trying. Think about how cute they are, and how precious their existence is before you go off in a tizzy. The endless affection for you and your family will make up for the headaches, we promise. So, how can you begin potty training your puppy? Since we’re all inside together, why not now? Berks Pet Care is here to help teach whenever you’re ready to get down to the business of your pupper’s business.
Teach Them Young
This may seem like a no-brainer but we cannot suggest this tip enough. Of course, you’ll have to wait until they are old enough to be trained, then you can proceed. With maturity comes a better control of their bladder and bowel movements. We recommend potty training around the three-month marker.
Pick Your Potty Training Method
There will come a time to decide if your dog will: relieve itself outside, or relieve itself inside your home. No way is wrong but it is imperative that you pick only one and do not change it. If you are deciding inside of the house it is likely you do not have an area for your pet to go. What you’ll need is to decide an area in your home where the puppy will go potty.
From there, you will have to cover that area with potty pads. We recommend every pupper owner own a few because of how easy it is to clean, and convenient. Replace the pee pads once used. For the outside method try to pinpoint when your puppy is ready to use the bathroom. Normally, this is after some activities, and when they wake up. From there, let nature happen!
Practice Positive Reinforcement
Listen, we know it can be frustrating teaching a new dog new tricks. However, using positive reinforcement teaches your puppy to follow the desired behavior by rewarding them when they do so. Need someone to watch and walk your dog? Give us a call at (610) 467-7003 or use our online contact form.
